Weight Loss FAQ
What is Mounjaro and how does it help with weight loss?
Mounjaro (active ingredient: tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injection. It mimics two appetite-regulating hormones. GLP-1 and GIP to help you feel full faster and eat less. Used with a calorie-controlled diet and exercise, it supports weight loss and better blood sugar control.
Is Mounjaro approved for weight loss in the UK?
Yes. The MHRA approved Mounjaro for weight management in November 2023. NICE recommended its use for people with obesity and weight‑related health issues in December 2024. NHS England says it’s available under strict eligibility and phased rollout from March–June 2025.
Who can get Mounjaro on the NHS?
Access is limited to those with a BMI of 40 or more, or slightly lower BMI combined with several weight‑related health issues (like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea). Eligibility expands over time through specialist services offering wrap‑around care, diet, exercise, regular reviews.
How do you use Mounjaro and what results can you expect?
You inject it once a week under the skin, rotating injection sites (abdomen, thigh, upper arm). It starts reducing appetite within the first week. Research shows up to 15 % weight loss by week 24 on higher doses, and up to 20 % by week 72.
What side effects and risks should I know?
Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, and reduced appetite. Severe risks, though rare, include pancreatitis and issues affecting absorption of contraceptives or hormone therapy.
What does treatment involve beyond the injection?
Mounjaro must be part of a structured weight‑loss programme. Treatment includes dietary and physical activity support. We will require our patients to follow‑up and lifestyle planning.
What about cost and availability?
NHS access is free but restricted by eligibility and phased rollout. Private prescriptions start at around £130–£159/month. As of September 2025, prices will increase by up to 170 %—the highest monthly dose could rise to £330.
