Microsuction Earwax Removal FAQ

What is microsuction earwax removal?

Microsuction uses a small vacuum probe under a microscope to remove earwax safely, without water. It lets the clinician see inside your ear and suction wax directly

Is it safer than syringing or irrigation?

Yes. Unlike ear syringing—which uses water and can damage the eardrum—microsuction stays gentle, precise, and less risky. It’s widely accepted as the safest method in NHS and private clinics

Does it hurt or feel uncomfortable?

Most people tolerate microsuction well. You might hear a whistling or suction noise. Some find that odd, but it shouldn’t cause pain. If the wax is hard or deep, you could feel slight discomfort, clinician stops immediately if it's painful

How long does the procedure take?

Usually 15–20 minutes, depending on how much wax and if one or both ears need treatment.

Should I use drops before the appointment?

Softening wax with olive or almond oil (2–5 days before) can help, unless you have a perforated eardrum or infection. NHS guidance supports softening first then microsuction if needed

Are there any risks or side effects?

Risks are minimal. You may feel temporary ringing, brief dizziness, or mild discomfort. Noise could cause temporary hearing shift but is not harmful

How often will I need it?

That depends. If you use hearing aids, earbuds, or have narrow ear canals, you may need checks every 3–6 months.
