Travel Clinic FAQ

Which travel vaccinations do I need?

That depends on your destination, itinerary and your health history. Common shots include hepatitis A, typhoid, yellow fever, rabies, Japanese encephalitis and meningitis. Use trusted sources like TravelHealthPro or the NHS Fit for Travel site to check requirements for your destination. Some vaccines are standard; others are essential depending on your plans.

How soon should I get vaccinated before I travel?

Ideally 6 to 8 weeks before departure. Some vaccines need multiple doses over weeks. Yellow fever and other certificate‑linked vaccines require this lead time for full immunity. In urgent cases, it’s still worth booking late, partial protection often beats none.

Do I pay for travel vaccinations or are any free under the NHS?

Some are free via the NHS like hepatitis A, typhoid, and polio (as part of a combined dose). Your GP will prescribe these. However, all travel vaccines are private and subject to clinic charges.

What happens during a travel consultation?

You’ll meet a trained health professional who’ll assess your destination, vaccine history and health risks. They’ll recommend and often administer needed vaccines in the same appointment.

Are there side effects or is it safe to vaccinate?

Vaccines are safe and the risk of side effects is far lower than the risk of illness abroad. Mild effects may include soreness, tiredness, mild fever. Severe reactions are rare and treatable.

Can I still get vaccinated last minute?

Yes. Some vaccines and malaria tablets can still be given shortly before travel. Yellow fever certificates, though, need 10 days to become valid.

Do you issue vaccination certificates?

Yes. Yellow fever and meningitis ACWY certificates can be provided. You’ll also normally receive a vaccination record for other shots.
